5 Ways to Give Back to the Environment Through Paddling

As paddlers, we see firsthand the staggering effects of pollution and environmental neglect. According to EarthDay.org, global plastics have reached an estimated 460 million metric tons in recent years, with 75 to 199 million tons currently polluting our oceans.

Smaller items, like cigarette butts, contribute immensely to the problem. 4 billion are littered in just U.S. waterways annually, comprising nearly 20% of all litter. These statistics remind us that the waterways we love are under serious threat, making it all the more important for paddlers to play an active role in protecting the environment.

During Earth Month, why not channel that love for paddling into something even greater? Here are five actionable ways to give back to the environment while enjoying your favorite water sport.

1. Participate in Waterway Cleanups

One of the most impactful ways to improve the environment is to help remove litter from the waterways you paddle through. Organizations like Ocean Conservancy or your local paddling group often host cleanup events.

If there aren’t any in your area, why not organize one? Create a Facebook event or tap into our community – post flyers at your library or community centers to generate interest. This is a great way to create an organized effort to improve the environment. It’s also a fantastic avenue for making new friends. No effort is too small. Every piece of plastic or debris you remove makes a difference to aquatic life and the health of the ecosystem.

2. Trade Disposable Gear for Sustainable Alternatives

Regardless of your water sport of choice, there are almost always greener alternatives when it comes to gear selection. From reusable water bottles to eco-friendly paddling gear, making sustainable choices can reduce your environmental footprint as a paddler. Look for:

  • Biodegradable or “reef safe” sunscreen to protect ecosystems (and your skin!) from toxic chemicals.
  • Paddling gear made of recycled or sustainable materials, like paddles crafted from bamboo or recycled plastic.
  • Reusable bags to store snacks or items without creating waste. Find durable, dishwasher-safe sandwich bags, gallon bags, and more from eco-conscious companies like Stasher or Bee’s Wrap.
  • Second-hand gear is a great way to reuse to reduce your impact on waste and save money at the same time.

By choosing eco-conscious products, you can support brands that care for the environment and reduce your contribution to pollution – a total win-win.

3. Advocate for Clean Water Initiatives

Paddlers are some of the most passionate advocates for water conservation. One of the best ways to give back to the environment is to support groups like American Rivers or Waterkeeper Alliance. These groups work to protect and restore waterways. You can advocate for policies that ensure rivers, lakes, and oceans remain clean and healthy, often with just a few clicks or a small donation.

Taking a moment to share these organizations across your social media channels can help nudge everyone toward a healthier environment. Your voice can help tackle environmental challenges, from reducing single-use plastics to advocating for stricter regulations on industrial pollution that directly affects your area.

4. Practice “Leave No Trace” Principles

The golden rule of outdoor activities, leave no trace. This applies as much to paddling as it does to camping or hiking. Here’s how you can enhance your paddling trips with these principles:

  • Carry out whatever you brought in, including food scraps, trash, and recyclables. Make a plan for containing trash before you’re already knees-deep in your favorite waterway. It’s much easier to take a moment before you set out than to fumble with waste when you’re already adventuring.
  • Avoid disturbing wildlife by keeping a respectful distance from animals and their habitats. Encourage others to do the same.
  • Choose launches and stops that minimize erosion and protect the shoreline.

By ensuring every trip has minimal environmental impact, you’ll protect the beauty of the waterways you love for generations to come.

5. Introduce Others to Ethical Paddling

Sometimes, the best way to give back is by inspiring others to do the same. Share your passion for paddling and environmental responsibility by inviting your friends, family, or paddling group to partake in eco-friendly practices. Whether that is organizing a group cleanup or teaching someone about water safety and conservation, every new advocate strengthens the ripple effect.

Host a seminar at your workplace or consider posting your efforts on social media to encourage your followers to make their time on the water eco-conscious too. Giving back to the environment ensures that future paddlers get to enjoy all the beauty of nature that we have now.
