Paddleboarding is a fantastic way to enjoy the outdoors, get a full-body workout, and connect with nature. Although anyone can enjoy paddleboarding, there are some specific tips that can make the experience more enjoyable and comfortable for women.
In this blog post, we’ll discuss tips and advice specific to paddleboarding for women.
Choose the right board:
Women typically have a lower center of gravity and narrower shoulders, so selecting a board that’s specifically designed for women can make a big difference in comfort and control. Look for boards with a slightly narrower width and lighter weight. Inflatable boards can be a great option for women, as they’re easy to transport and store. Consider a board by a brand like iRocker, or Gili. There are also some decent boards on Amazon (and some not so decent ones) so make sure you read the reviews!
Paddle adjustment:
Choose a paddle with an adjustable length, allowing you to find the perfect fit for your height and arm length. Generally, a paddle should be 8-10 inches taller than your height. A smaller blade size is also recommended for women, as it requires less effort to pull through the water and can help reduce fatigue.
Clothing and sun protection:
Wear comfortable, quick-drying clothing that allows for a wide range of motion. Choose garments made from moisture-wicking materials to help keep you dry and avoid chafing. Opt for a rashguard or a wetsuit if you’ll be in colder water. Remember sun protection, such as sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat. Consider wearing a UPF-rated shirt for additional sun protection.
Hydrate and fuel up:
Paddleboarding can be physically demanding, so stay hydrated and bring some snacks for an energy boost. Energy bars, trail mix, or fruit are great options for on-the-go snacking. Bring a reusable water bottle that can be securely attached to your board.
Safety equipment:
In addition to a life jacket and leash, consider bringing a small, waterproof safety kit that includes a whistle, a small first aid kit, and a waterproof phone case. You can use a whistle to signal for help if needed, while a first aid kit will help you address minor injuries on the water.
“Shark Week” and paddleboarding:
If you’re paddling during your period, consider using a menstrual cup or tampons. They’re less likely to cause discomfort or leakage while you’re on the water. Please bring a small waterproof bag to store used products until you can dispose of them properly on land. We like these Mylar bags for all things that need to be carried out!
And while we’re talking about these things – we are huge fans of Kula Clothes!
Build your paddleboarding community:
Connect with other female paddlers through local clubs, social media groups (like Girl Paddlers), or paddleboarding meetups. These connections can provide support, camaraderie, and opportunities to share tips and tricks with other women who share your passion for the sport.
Strengthen your body for paddleboarding:
Incorporate exercises that target the muscles you’ll use while paddleboarding, such as yoga, Pilates, or strength training. Focus on your core, back, and shoulder muscles to improve your stability and power on the water.
Seek instruction from female professionals:
If you’re new to paddleboarding or want to improve your skills, consider taking a lesson or attending a clinic led by a female instructor. This can provide a supportive learning environment and the opportunity to ask questions specific to women’s needs and concerns.
Now, have fun!
Paddleboarding is a fantastic activity for women, offering an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and a great way to stay fit and socialize with friends. By following these female-focused tips, you’ll be well on your way to creating memorable and enjoyable paddleboarding experiences.
